Southern Appalachian Arts and Crafts

The Appalachian Traveller's collection of hand made folk art and crafts originates from talented southern highlanders living in the Carolinas, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. Normally these products would be available only within the reach of their regional trading area. Thanks to the Internet however, we can let the world know about the unique arts and handicrafts that you'll find in this beautiful region of the United States.

Barn and Silo The self-sufficient crafts tradition of mountaineers was necessitated by their isolation from the "modern" new world. Farmers built their homes and furniture from the abundant variety of hardwoods from the forest, sewed clothes from the animals they hunted and raised, made tools and cookware from the iron they mined and forged, and crafted baskets and pottery from nature's blessings. The rich diversity of European and Native American people who settled the area makes their contribution to the folk art of Appalachia truly original.

Within Appalachian Traveller you'll find links to information about State and National Parks, Museums and Exhibits of Appalachian history, and Points of Interest, including favorite destinations of tourists in six southern states.

Please visit our How To section for pioneer living tips and techniques and our Glossary to southern Appalachian Mountains names and places. wildlife, native plants, geography, mountaintop recipes, and folk lore.

We hope you'll enjoy this "slice of life in the hills" that the Appalachian Traveller brings you. Please bookmark our site and visit often. I must say, this is my first experience with buying something over the internet, and I may do all my shopping this way in the future. It seems this may be one of the few ways in the future to get products that are handmade and distinctive.

Good luck with your online store.
