MORE Bird Houses and Feeders

Yours was the first bluebird box I had success with, this is a reorder.
Alexander N. - Lynchburg, VA

Your bluebird house was up all of a week and it has a bluebird (I think) nest in it already! It's the cutest little thing (your house AND the nest), so easy to use. Better than the ones I've seen at Agway AND at local Audubon Center. Thanks.....Carol - Rhinebeck, NY

Attracting Bluebirds to Your Backyard
  • Bluebirds have steadily increased in number since their near extinction, thanks to the many birding enthusiasts who provided nesting boxes to replace the bluebirds' disappearing natural nesting cavities.
  • If you are interested in attracting a mating pair of bluebirds to your backyard, you'll need a suitable house for their 2-3 spring and early summer broods.

Plan Ahead, They Do
  • Now is a good time to purchase and install a bluebird nesting box. You'll want to have your house ready for "inspection" in the very early spring (February for the South), and it may be inclement weather when Ms. Bluebird is selecting her best nesting site.
  • Bluebirds choose their nesting location before copulating, and some say that a female will choose her mate based on the house he has provided.

Bird Houses for Cavity Dwelling Birds
  • Bird houses come in all shapes and sizes, but your most important consideration when selecting a bluebird house is the size of the hole and nesting cavity. Bluebirds naturally build their nests in old woodpecker cavities, the size of the hole was random, but our specifications are to give bluebird chicks a better chance of surviving.
  • We recommend a 1-1/2 inch hole for Eastern and Western bluebirds (big enough for the bluebird, smaller than their natural enemies) with a predator guard for added protection and 7-8 inches of clearance from the hole to the bottom of the nest.
  • Ventilation and drainage must also be provided. Most bluebird boxes come with an opening for easy removal of old nests; we recommend doing that every fall after a nesting season. Then, wash the inside of your your bluebird box with a weak solution of bleach and water. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry before closing the box.

Locating your Bluebird House
  • Bluebirds are insect eaters and like to build their nests near the ground. We recommend mounting your house 5-6 feet from the ground on a structure or pole in open grassland, the hole visible from a perching spot, and water nearby. Should you have a problem with snakes, sparrows, or starlings, mount your bluebird box on a metal pole with a baffle away from your home, barn, or garage. If you live in very hot climate, face the bird house northeasterly away from the afternoon sun.

How Many Bluebird Houses?
  • One, or two at the most, for the average size lot. Bluebirds are territorial and will not nest near other bluebirds. Some ornithologists recommend two bluebird houses back to back, one for the bluebird, one for a tree swallow whose early and one-time occupation will prevent other bluebirds from nesting there. If you have a fence row, or more that one acre of land, take advantage of our sale prices on multiple houses.

Can I Look Inside?
  • If your bluebird house provides an easy to open hinged door, you may check on your bluebirds during nest building, egg laying, and after the eggs are hatched. When you see the adults out of the nesting box quickly view the nest, number of eggs, or the young. Do not disturb a bluebird during incubation (about two weeks) or while fledging.

In addition to bluebird houses, we offer handcrafted western cedar chickadee and wren houses, and pine painted chipmunk and wild bird feeders. We also offer a line of barn wood bird houses that are as unique as birdhouses come, practical and decorative too!.
